Explore the quaint mining town of Anaconda in winter

Virtual Treadmill Walk

Walking Tour – Anaconda Montana – 4K – City Walks – Virtual Travel Walking Treadmill Walk Scenery

We take you on the first of two walking tours in Anaconda Montana on a cold frosty morning. Anaconda became known for its mining history. The city was founded by Marcus Daly (we see a hotel with that name) when he funded a smelter on the creek through town. The city later grew infamous for the pollution that came with that history and is a super fund site. You can get a glimpse of the mining history from the little houses that line our root and the occasional large house as well. Despite its size, Anaconda has a important role in Montana’s history. Read the book The War of the Copper Kings: Greed, Power, and Politics for some good robber baron history.

The Pintlars overlook the town of Anaconda on our virtual walks today

I was struck by the beautiful snowy Pintlar mountains the surround the town on three sides and I’m basically in love with the Smelter Brewing company building. This was a very nice morning for a walk, so much so we did two. Keep an eye out for the next one in a few days.
Anaconda, county seat of Deer Lodge County, which has a consolidated city-county government, is located in southwestern Montana, United States. The city is located at the foot of the Anaconda Range (known locally as the “Pintlars”). The Continental Divide passes within 8 mi (13 km) south of the community. The area has lots of great outdoor recreation opportunities and a close knit community vibe.

The city got its start with Marcus Daly, one of the so called Copper Kings, in 1883. He originally wanted to call it Copperopolis but it turned out the name was already taken. Instead he named it after the smelter company of the same name. The city is 25miles from Butte which made it very accessible to the raw material being extracted there. As of the 2020 the population of the area was 9,421 as of 2020.

If you get a chance, the Smelter City Brewing company is worth a visit. The owner has rehabbed the building and it’s beautiful. Also, it’s become a bit of a hub for the community.
