Today, we’re heading out to explore one of the most fascinating and historic neighborhoods in Budapest—the Jewish Quarter.
This walking video is a free tour through an area that’s full of life, character, and deep history. At its heart is the Dohány Street Synagogue, the second-largest synagogue in the world and the largest in Europe. It’s a stunning building—both architecturally and emotionally—serving as a powerful reminder of the vibrant Jewish community that once thrived here, and the tragedies they endured during World War II. The synagogue complex also includes a museum, a memorial, and a cemetery—one of the few in the world located within a synagogue courtyard.
As we walk, we’ll pass colorful street art, quiet little parks, and some of the Quarter’s more modern features—like Szimpla Kert, one of the original and most famous ruin bars in the city. I even stepped inside for a quick look around, so you’ll get a glimpse of its quirky interior.
This neighborhood has seen a lot—waves of change, hardship, and revival—and today it’s one of the most creative, youthful, and energetic parts of Budapest. A real mix of old and new.
