Charlotte has a wonderful mix of old and new

Hello Walkers,

After a few days visiting with family, we made our way to Charlotte, North Carolina—the first of two walks I filmed in this dynamic Southern city.

Known as the Queen City, Charlotte is home to several pro sports teams, a lively music and arts scene, the Charlotte Motor Speedway, and even a massive whitewater kayaking course just outside the city. It’s also one of the country’s major banking and financial centers, second only to New York City in size. The city was named after Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and serves as the county seat of Mecklenburg County.

The metro area is home to about 2.6 million people, and believe me, the traffic seemed to confirm it! On this particular morning, Uptown Charlotte (what they call their downtown) was relatively quiet—probably thanks to the weekday timing—but there were still some festive Christmas decorations adding a nice seasonal touch.

Charlotte is the largest city in North Carolina, and it has a lot to offer—great food, walkable neighborhoods, cultural spots, and southern charm. Like a lot of fast-growing cities, it has its challenges, but from what I’ve seen, the community here is engaged and working to shape its future. I have a few friends in the area, and honestly, I’d love to come back sometime and really dig in with a longer stay.

According to Wikipedia, Charlotte is made up of 199 neighborhoods—including places like Uptown, Biddleville, Southside, and many more. I always enjoy walking through local neighborhoods and getting a feel for what makes each one unique. It’s a big part of why I do these walks—discovering the small things that give a place its soul.

Let me know in the comments if I missed anything or got something wrong—and of course, feel free to share your own Charlotte stories. Whether you’re using these walks for exercise, stress relief, or just to explore, I love hearing how you’re enjoying the journey.
