After our trip to Elkhorn Ranch, we took a little side quest over to Chiricahua National Monument because I’d seen it in the news recently. It was amazing.

Chiricahua Stone Formation Walk – Arizona Virtual Treadmill Walking Tour

I saw Chiricahua mentioned in several news articles recently about it possibly becoming a new national park. I figured we’d better go check it out before the crowds arrived. As I mention in this and other walks, we are fascinated with Arizona now and want to go back and really explore more. This little trip was a nice enticement.

Hiking Chiricahua’s Echo Canyon Trail was so beautiful

Winter was a good time to go despite some packed snow in sections of the trail. It’s a relatively small monument with some historical aspects and some wonderful natural stone formations. To the north, but outside the park, we visited historic Fort Bowie National Historic Site. It’s the ruins of an old ford built during the Apache Wars.

Not on this walk but Fort Bowie is a short distance north and offers another beautiful hike

We start our hike along part of Echo Canyon out at around 6700 feet of elevation and navigate down through some really cool rocky thumbs with views out over the valley with tons more. The rock formations extend down into the valley and the drops are steep sometimes but the trail is fairly simple.

We end up at a frozen little oasis where animals come to find standing water. I hope you enjoy the desert mountain walking tour. Keep on stepping and check out the website. -H
