4K City Walks – Craters of the Moon Idaho in Snow and Sunshine – Virtual Treadmill Scenery Walk

We’re in Idaho! And I take you along the groomed ski trail on a small loop through the snow covered Craters of the Moon national monument which is open in the winter. TravelingMel is out skiing so maybe we’ll see her but otherwise it’s a virtual hiking trail with wide open views of the snow covered Lava Beds that NASA has used for training. The giant rocks peak through the snow leaving a speckled appearance to the landscape. Craters of the mooon monument is often mistake as being Craters of the Moon National Park but it does not have that status. We’ve been a couple of times and you can learn about those trips on the TrevelingMel blog or in the TravelingMel video here.

While Anders, Finn, and Melynda skiied longer, I took a walk for our virtual walking tours

Idaho is a beautiful and geologically diverse state. Craters of the Moon National Monument is one of the coolest places. If you get a chance to go, take it, and try to get the permit to go into the Lava Tubes. They are not at all like caves in that they are huge and almost always with access to natural light. The permits are so you know about keeping bats safe.
There aren’t many hotels or restaurants nearby but you can camp there in an established campground next to the visitors center. For Hotels and where to eat, you’ll need to go to Arco or Carey, ID
