Walking Tour Dillon Montana – Virtual Travel Walking Treadmill Walk Scenery
Hello Walkers, After a snowy weekend, I decided to take a walk and explore Dillon, Montana. This small town was founded back in 1880 in the Beaverhead Valley as a railroad hub. It was originally called “Terminus,” since it was the temporary northernmost stop on the Utah and Northern Railway while the line was still being built. A year later, it was renamed Dillon in honor of Sidney Dillon, the Union Pacific Railroad President who helped bring the tracks through to Butte. The railroad chose this location in part because of how close it is to the region’s gold mines.
These days, Dillon is home to several major employers, including Barretts Minerals Inc., Barrett Hospital and HealthCare, and Beaverhead County. Great Harvest Bread Company has its franchising headquarters right here, and there’s even a Patagonia outlet in town.
For a small place, Dillon has no shortage of places to eat. There are 31 restaurants, from hometown favorites like Papa T’s Family Dining, Sparky’s Garage, and Sweetwater Coffee, to spots like Stageline Pizza, La Fiesta Mexicana, and Mac’s Last Cast. If you’re looking for craft beer, the Beaverhead Brewing Company is worth a visit too. And of course, there are the usual fast food options—Dairy Queen, McDonald’s, Subway, Taco John’s, and more—as well as chain stores like Safeway, Town & Country, Ace Hardware, and Murdoch’s.
On this walk, I start downtown and make my way through a quiet residential neighborhood full of classic old houses. From there, I head over to the campus of the University of Montana Western. The air’s cold, but it’s starting to warm up a little as I walk past the beautiful turn-of-the-century facades that give the town so much character. I also pass by the historic Metlen Hotel—always a favorite landmark.
