Welcome to another spectacular virtual hike through the Italian Dolomites—this time a short but unforgettable trek in the Alta Badia region of South Tyrol, Italy. This one’s perfect for your treadmill workout or just a little scenic escape into the mountains.
This virtual walking experience picks up near the top of a climb that began down at Passo Gardena, where we gained around 1,500 feet of elevation on a steep and rugged scree slope. The final stretch of the ascent was aided by a series of cables bolted into the raw limestone, helping us scramble over exposed rock. It was a challenge, and by the time I reached the top—I was spent. But then came the reward.
At the summit, we found a cozy Rifugio (mountain hut), perched amid jagged peaks, where I sat down for a well-earned beer. The late afternoon light was magical, and I knew I had to capture it and share it with you. The vast limestone landscape stretched in every direction—rugged, surreal, and strangely serene. It felt like walking through another world, a moonscape carved by wind and time.
The next morning was even more incredible. We woke up above the clouds, surrounded by an ocean of mist below and the crisp air of a high-altitude morning. As we continued along the trail, we could hear the oinking calls of chamois goats echoing across the narrow couloir and rocky cliffs—nature’s soundtrack in one of the most beautiful places on Earth.
