Exploring the Serenity of Mammoth Hot Springs: A Virtual Walk Through Yellowstone in December

Hey everyone, welcome back to Yellowstone National Park! Today, we’re taking a virtual stroll through one of Yellowstone National Park’s most iconic and otherworldly spots: Mammoth Hot Springs. It’s early December, and the landscape is nothing short of magical—think frosty mornings, wisps of steam curling into the crisp air, and a quiet solitude you won’t find during the summer rush. If you’d like to explore the terraces, you can see my earlier walk linked below.
If you’ve never visited Mammoth Hot Springs in winter, this post (and my video) will give you a taste of what you’re missing and a nice little virtual walk if you want to walk along. Whether you are working out or even you’re planning a trip, reminiscing about past adventures, or just looking for a calming escape, this virtual walk is for you.
What Makes Mammoth Hot Springs Special?

Mammoth Hot Springs is a geothermal wonder. Picture tiered limestone terraces, sculpted over centuries by mineral-rich hot water flowing from deep within the Earth. The formations look like something out of an alien landscape, with vibrant hues of orange, white, and grey. In winter, snow dusts the terraces, creating a striking contrast against the warm, steaming pools. But today we are walking around the historic buildings of Mammoth Hot Springs. The season is between summer and winter so the Mammoth Hotel and a couple other things are closed but we’ll see plenty of historic buildings anyway.

Why Virtual Walks Matter

I started making these virtual walks because I believe in the power of travel and nature to heal and inspire your fitness and workout. Not everyone can visit Yellowstone in person, but that doesn’t mean you can’t experience its beauty. By sharing these videos, I hope to bring a piece of the jewel of the park system into your home and help make your walking workout a bit more pleasant and interesting. Virtual Walking Challenges you to get up and get moving, even if you the weather outside is frightful.
So, whether you’re working out at the gym or home, or just sipping coffee on a chilly morning, taking a break from work, and winding down for the day, I hope this walk provides a moment of calm and connection.
