Our Virtual Walk Through Talkeetna, AK on a Misty Morning
We’ve had a great time in Fairbanks and stopped for two days to check out Denali National Park. From there we drove down to historic Talkeetna for our last city walk of this trip.
Talkeetna has a wonderful quirky, artsy vibe to it now and it’s definitely a tourist destination but it also has it’s own local character that was fun to check out. The village currently has a population of about 1000 people but that’s spread out over quite a bit of area. The town started in 1916 when the Alaska Railroad chose the area as the district headquarters. In fact, there’s still a train station just beyond the old town center.
Flightseeing, rafting, mountain biking, homestead tours, hiking, camping, fishing and hunting make up a large portion of the local economy. It’s also where most people fly out of on their way to attempt to summit Denali.
The old town center consists of many old historic cabins and a few newer buildings. It has a brewery, a pizza place, a year round coffee shop, several restaurants, galleries, and gift shops. In the 1970’s an effort to declare the city a historic area but that was defeated. After residents realized they’d lost quite a few of the old buildings, they passed the designation in the 1990’s.
This morning virtual walk is nice and quiet and the mist from the adjacent Susitna River sits low in the turning Birch trees. It’s such a nice relaxing place to walk for sure.

CORRECTION: I mispoke about the Sustina’s Volume. I guess really it is the 15th largest river in the United States, ranked by average discharge volume at its mouth.
