Great Falls, Montana Residential Virtual Treadmill Walking Tour
Hello Walkers,
Welcome to Great Falls, Montana, for the second of our two virtual walks through this historic city on the banks of the Missouri River. I was in town for a job, but as always, I found time to lace up my shoes and explore a little more of the area—and I’m glad I did. Today’s walk takes us through downtown Great Falls just as the sun is beginning to rise, casting a golden light across the quiet streets and warming the world after a chilly start.
We begin in the heart of downtown, where historic buildings line the streets and early morning light bounces off storefront windows. The city has that peaceful, slow-waking energy that I always enjoy capturing—when the streets are still calm and you can really feel the bones of the place.
From there, we head up through some residential neighborhoods, passing tidy homes, tree-lined avenues, and classic architecture that hints at the town’s 19th and early 20th-century prosperity. Great Falls was founded by Paris Gibson, a visionary who saw the potential of the Missouri River’s falls to power industry—and he was right. His influence is still seen all over town, and we’ll actually be paying a visit to Paris Gibson Square Museum of Art, located in the old Central High School building. The museum now showcases contemporary art and celebrates Montana’s creative spirit.
But before that, we stop at one of the city’s crown jewels: the Charles M. Russell Museum. This spot is a must-see for anyone interested in Western art and Montana history. Known as the “cowboy artist,” Charlie Russell lived and worked here, and his home and studio are preserved on the museum grounds. Inside, you’ll find a stunning collection of paintings, bronzes, and illustrated letters that vividly depict life in the American West.
This walk combines history, art, and that quintessential Montana small-town charm. As we make our way back down into town, you’ll notice how the sunlight has shifted, the streets have filled just a little, and the day has fully arrived.
