Great Falls, MT Virtual Treadmill Walking Tour
Hello Walkers,
We’re back on the road again—this time in Great Falls, Montana—for another project, and of course, I couldn’t resist squeezing in a couple of virtual walks while we’re here. Great Falls sits on the banks of the Missouri River and holds an important place in both Montana history and the Lewis and Clark expedition. It’s a town shaped by industry, exploration, and the power of water.
I filmed this walk in mid-April, which turned out to be that tricky shoulder season kind of weather—not quite winter, not quite spring. It was cold, but not cold enough to stay dry. Instead, we got a messy combination of wet snow, slush, and chill winds that soaked everything. The sidewalks were slippery in spots, and the air had that sharp bite that lets you know Montana still has some winter left in her.
But even with the dreary weather, it was still a joy to share a bit of Great Falls with you. The city has a quiet charm, with historic downtown buildings, wide streets, and a mix of industrial and cultural landmarks. We passed by some old storefronts, civic buildings, and neighborhoods that hint at the town’s once-booming status as a hub for hydropower and rail transport.
The Missouri River is central here—both geographically and historically. The city’s name comes from the series of five waterfalls in the area that once posed a major challenge to the Lewis and Clark expedition. Their difficult portage around the falls is one of the more impressive feats of that legendary journey.
Even though the weather wasn’t ideal, it brought a certain atmospheric quality to the walk. There’s something about Montana in the in-between seasons—moody skies, quiet streets, and the smell of wet earth—that invites reflection and slows your pace.
