Historic Medora North Dakota Virtual Walking Tour – Edge of Teddy Roosevelt NP
Hello Walkers,
We’re back on the road and this time we’ve landed in the wide-open beauty of North Dakota—a place full of surprises, big skies, and hidden gems. Our first stop was the tiny but vibrant town of Medora, nestled right up against the dramatic landscapes of Theodore Roosevelt National Park. If you’ve never been, Medora might just surprise you. It’s one of those places where history, natural beauty, and family-friendly charm all collide in the best way possible.
This walk takes us through the heart of Medora, which today feels like a slice of Americana brought to life. The town itself was nearly lost to time until it was revitalized in the 1960s by Harold Schafer, a local businessman and philanthropist. Thanks to his efforts, many of the buildings have been lovingly restored, giving the town a warm, welcoming, and almost storybook feel. Despite its small size, Medora is packed with activities, museums, shops, and more than its fair share of ice cream parlors—three of them, in fact!
On our visit, we walked through the scenic streets, past historic western facades, horse-drawn wagons, gift shops, and restaurants, all with the stunning Badlands terrain rising in the distance. If you’re traveling with kids, there’s plenty to keep them entertained—mini golf, stagecoach rides, a museum, and even a children’s park.
One of the town’s standout experiences is the Pitchfork Steak Fondue—yes, they actually cook the steaks on pitchforks over an open flame. After that, we had the pleasure of attending the legendary Medora Musical, an outdoor show held in a beautiful amphitheater looking out over the Badlands. It’s an all-American variety show that celebrates Teddy Roosevelt, the Old West, and the spirit of North Dakota.
We also have a quick plug for the locals: don’t miss the breakfast sandwiches at the C-Store—seriously, they’re worth waking up early for.
