Homer Alaska Old Downtown Area – Virtual Treadmill Walking Tour – Kenai Peninsula
Hello Walkers,
Today we’ve made our way across the stunning Kenai Peninsula to the charming and wonderfully quirky town of Homer, Alaska, perched on the shores of Kachemak Bay and looking out across Cook Inlet. This scenic virtual walk begins in Old Town Homer, a quiet, artsy neighborhood full of character and local color. We kick things off near Bishop’s Beach, where waves roll in and out with the tides and bald eagles are a common sight along the shoreline. It’s a peaceful and grounding spot with big skies and that wide-open Alaskan feeling.
From there, we head inland a bit toward the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center. This is an excellent stop if you ever visit in person—tons of info on the incredible seabird populations and marine ecosystems in the surrounding waters. The building itself sits on a bluff with incredible views of the bay and mountains, and even though we’re just passing by in this walk, it’s worth noting for a future visit.
Next, we make our way up to Pioneer Avenue, the main commercial stretch of town. This area has more of Homer’s modern vibe—cafes, gift shops, galleries, bookstores, and locally owned restaurants. You’ll pass by signs of Homer’s creative and independent spirit everywhere you look. The buildings might be simple, but many are decorated with murals, hand-carved signs, and coastal flair.
Along the way, we stroll past coffee shops, boutiques, and friendly locals going about their day. Even on a cool or overcast morning, there’s something cozy and inviting about the place. Homer isn’t a large city, but it’s full of life and has a strong identity rooted in fishing, art, nature, and a healthy dose of off-the-grid independence.
This is just part one of our Homer series. In the next walk, we’ll venture out onto the Homer Spit, a long, narrow finger of land stretching into the bay that’s famous for its boardwalk, fishing charters, quirky businesses, and waterfront views.
