Hello Walkers,
Today’s video brings you along on a charming stroll through the historic town of Kirkwall, the largest settlement on Orkney Mainland, off the northern coast of Scotland. Nestled between rolling hills and the sea, Kirkwall is a gateway to the Orkney Islands, serving as a hub with both a ferry terminal from Aberdeen and a small regional airport, making it surprisingly accessible despite its remote location.
Our walk takes us through the heart of the old town, where narrow streets wind past stone buildings, cozy inns, independent shops, and inviting cafés. Kirkwall has a lived-in charm that blends its Norse roots with a strong Scottish character, and it’s easy to feel the history in the cobbled lanes and slate rooftops.
We pass by the impressive St. Magnus Cathedral, a striking red sandstone structure that dates back to the 12th century. It towers over the town and is often referred to as the “Light of the North.” Across from the cathedral, we explore the grounds of the Earl’s Palace, a beautifully haunting ruin that offers a glimpse into the life of the island’s former nobility.
As we continue toward the port and marina area, you’ll see the more modern side of Kirkwall, with ferries, fishing boats, and the infrastructure that keeps island life connected to the mainland. Even in the drizzle—we did have to battle a bit of rain during filming—the place maintains a quiet beauty and peaceful energy that makes it perfect for a reflective walk or a treadmill workout with a view.
