Museum of Archeology in Naples, Italy
Our starting point from our second walk in Naples is the Museo Archeologico

Exploring Naples, Italy and its ancient streets. We took a day to walk the streets and take some tours of Italy’s oldest city. The thrum of activity couldn’t be held down by the grey weather. This walk takes us from the Museum of Archeology through narrow crowded streets to the Piazza del Plebiscito. I hope you enjoy the walk and the experience. We have a couple other walks from Naples and dozens from Italy.

One more virtual treadmill walk from amazing Naples, Italy. I’m experimenting with some different production styles and this one has no talking but does have subtitles/closed captioning if you click the little CC button on the video lower right. Let me know what you think in the comments. We start at the Naples Archeological Museum and make our way down to the Piazza Plebiscito via the Old Center, the Spanish Quarter, the incredible Galleria and so much more including basilicas, street vendors, cafes, fountains, statues, and the incredible vitality and energy of this ancient city.

Narrow street in Naples Italy
Naples is ancient and the streets are narrow and deep

I really enjoyed exploring Naples and sharing my discoveries with you. I’m not a true guide as much as a co-explorer. I often don’t even know the route I’ll take, just picking a couple of interesting points that seem like they’ll be about the right length and going from there. Using the captions allows me to go back and do a bit of research and share some interesting information that I don’t have access to at the time of the walk. Let me know what you think. I’m going to post these experiments on Thursdays for a couple more weeks and see how they do. I might also try adding subtitles to the “talkies” too. We’ll see but I will be reading your opinions in the comments section. Thanks, enjoy Napoli, and of course, keep on steppin’ -H

Piazza Plebiscito
The massive plaza has served as a parking lot and bus storage over the years.

Wikipedia:ย  Naples is the regional capital of Campania and the third-largest city of Italy, after Rome and Milan, with a population of 967,069 within the city’s administrative limits as of 2017. Its province-level municipality is the third-most populous metropolitan city in Italy with a population of 3,115,320 residents, and its metropolitan area stretches beyond the boundaries of the city wall for approximately 20 miles. Founded by Greeks in the first millennium BC, Naples is one of the oldest continuously inhabited urban areas in the world. In the eighth century BC, a colony known as Parthenope was established on the Pizzofalcone hill. Naples served as the capital of the Duchy of Naples (661โ€“1139), subsequently as the capital of the Kingdom of Naples (1282โ€“1816), and finally as the capital of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies โ€” until the unification of Italy in 1861. Naples is also considered a capital of the Baroque, beginning with the artist Caravaggio’s career in the 17th century and the artistic revolution he inspired. It was also an important centre of humanism and Enlightenment. The city has long been a global point of reference for classical music and opera through the Neapolitan School. Between 1925 and 1936, Naples was expanded and upgraded by Benito Mussolini’s government. During the later years of World War II, it sustained severe damage from Allied bombing as they invaded the peninsula. The city received extensive post-1945 reconstruction work. Naples’ historic city centre is the largest in Europe and has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A wide range of culturally and historically significant sites are nearby, including the Palace of Caserta and the Roman ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Naples is also known for its natural beauties, such as Posillipo, Phlegraean Fields, Nisida and Vesuvius. Neapolitan cuisine is noted for its association with pizza, which originated in the city, as well as numerous other local dishes. Restaurants in the Naples’ area have earned the most stars from the Michelin Guide of any Italian province.
