In today’s episode of 4K City Walks – Montana, we head just a few minutes outside of Livingston for a peaceful stroll along Old Boulder Road. This stretch of dirt road offers a quiet, scenic escape from town with wide-open views and a gentle pace that’s perfect for a treadmill walk or a moment of calm at home.
As we walk, Livingston Peak towers ahead with the jagged Absaroka Range stretching off to the south. The sky is full of motion—brilliant blue with puffy clouds sailing by, casting shadows across the rolling green hills. Early summer grasses ripple in the breeze, and the sounds of distant birds and the occasional truck on the far-off highway remind you that you’re out in Montana’s open country.
This road may seem simple at first glance—just a country lane flanked by fences and pastures—but there’s something grounding about it. I’ve always appreciated this route for the way it opens up to the landscape in every direction. It used to be a more direct passage into the Boulder River Valley, before the Swingley Road was improved and rerouted through the mountains, but it still holds that old Montana charm.
Today, it’s a favorite for walkers, joggers, cyclists, and the occasional horseback rider. You might see antelope in the fields or hawks circling above. It’s the kind of place where you breathe a little deeper and let your thoughts settle.
