Bozeman Montana Petes Hill – Virtual Treadmill Walk with Wildfire Smoke – City Walks
Hello Walkers,
Today’s virtual stroll takes place on a very smoky summer day here in Bozeman, Montana. Wildfire smoke had settled thickly over the valley, turning the sky a muted gray and softening the light across the landscape. I had originally planned to take you on a walk through downtown, but when I arrived, I discovered a classic car show in full swing—lots of people, music, and activity. While that kind of energy is great in its own way, it wasn’t quite what I had in mind for today’s more peaceful walk.
So instead, I pivoted and decided to take you on a quieter route—one that gives you a great sense of Bozeman’s open spaces and natural beauty. We start with a full walk along Pete’s Hill, a favorite local spot for walking, running, and catching panoramic views of the surrounding valley. Even with the smoke, you can still sense the wide-open space and enjoy the mix of native grasses, late-season wildflowers, and berry-laden shrubs along the trail.
From there, we wind our way down through a neighborhood and make our way over to the Museum of the Rockies via Church Street and Kagy Boulevard. This route gives us a little taste of Bozeman’s residential charm—tree-lined streets, a variety of architectural styles, and a slower pace than the busy downtown area.
The Museum of the Rockies is one of Bozeman’s best-known institutions, famous for its world-class collection of dinosaur fossils and its exhibits on regional history and culture. While we don’t go inside on this walk, it makes for a nice landmark at the end of the route and is worth checking out if you’re ever in town.
Despite the smoky skies, it was a lovely walk—calm, colorful, and full of small surprises like blooming wildflowers and the occasional late-summer berry. I hope you enjoy this treadmill travel walk and the quieter side of Bozeman.
