Rainy Hike to Pine Creek Falls in Montana’s Paradise Valley, a 4k Treadmill Nature Scenery with City Walks
NOTE: This was filmed the night before the historic 2022 Yellowstone Floods. If I’d left a bit later, I might have been trapped on this side of the canyon.
Hello Walkers,
It’s a rainy June day here in Montana, but we’re not letting the weather keep us indoors. In this virtual treadmill walk, I take you along the Pine Creek Falls Trail—normally a popular destination in the Paradise Valley area just outside Livingston, but on this day, the rain kept most folks away. That just means we’ve got the trail (and the peace and quiet) mostly to ourselves.
From the start, the trail is soaked, muddy, and a bit messy—but there’s something special about walking through a misty forest with rain dripping from the branches and the smell of wet pine filling the air. It’s the kind of peaceful, earthy beauty you don’t get on bluebird days. We follow the rushing creek upstream, crossing it at a few points where the recent rain has turned it into a full-on torrent. It’s a little slippery, but nothing too wild—and totally worth the effort.
As we climb above the drainage, the trail winds through dense forest with brief openings that offer glimpses of the mountains. Eventually, we reach Pine Creek Falls, cascading dramatically down the rocky cliffside, made even more powerful by all that extra water from the storm. The falls roar, the air is cool and damp, and the whole place feels alive.
I came back soaked and chilled, but I didn’t mind one bit. There’s something refreshing about getting a little uncomfortable in the outdoors—it reminds you that nature doesn’t always come with perfect weather, but it always delivers something worthwhile.
This trail is part of the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness area, and it’s just one of many gems in Montana’s vast network of public lands. Whether you’re out here hiking in person or joining me virtually from home, I hope you enjoy this wet, wild, and wonderful walk in the woods.
