View of the Spanish Steps from the fountain at the base in Rome, Italy
The Spanish steps are very popular tourist attraction

The Spanish Steps in Rome, Italy, ascend between the Piazza di Spagna at the bottom and Piazza Trinità dei Monti, with the Trinità dei Monti.

The stairway of 135 steps was built when a French diplomat left funds of 20,000 scudi, in 1723–1725, linking the Trinità dei Monti church under the patronage of the Bourbon kings of France, at the top of the steps, and the Spanish Embassy to the Holy See in the Palazzo Monaldeschi at the bottom of the steps. The stairway was designed by the architects Francesco de Sanctis and Alessandro Specchi.

Looking down the Spanish Steps in Rome, Italy

I really enjoyed this walk. This area has a ton of chic shops and restaurants and we pass a couple of boutique high end hotels and at least one super car.  The Villa Borghese park offers a natural respite from the weight stone buildings in the rest of the area. History seeps from every alleyway, side street, and hidden courtyard (though we peek into a few) in this part of the city.  We make a grand loop in this virtual walk through Rome. Don’t worry, I rewarded myself with a gelato after I was done. Keep on steppin’ -H
