Stillwater River Trail Virtual Walk Return trip
This is one of our favorite virtual walks in the area. The first time we walked this trail, it blew our minds. I filmed this one in December because we hadn’t gotten much snow yet. The “lake” of Sioux Charlie had this amazing clear ice thick enough to walk across. Still, a bit unnerving but such a beautiful trail.
This 3.5 mile virtual hike from Sioux Charlie Lake to the Trailhead takes you a little over an hour but the views are stunning! The valley was very windy but oh so beautiful. This virtual walk is the return journey following the outbound leg we posted for you last week. We did this hike as a family (see Instagram channel) last week and it was my first time. I was blown away and knew I’d have to film it for you guys.
We start out at the frozen lake called Sioux Charlie. It was named for a trapper and trader with Native American and European heritage. Seems a bit off for our modern times. It’s a beautiful location in a copse of open pine trees that allows easy access to the river. The trail leads back through the west side of the valley. It’s mostly in the trees but has several elevated areas from which you can get some stunning views back south. The sepia toned, winter light was a treat and the temps weren’t too cold for this time of year. Plenty of ice though and I had to watch my footing. The Canyon at the end of the hike can be a torrent in spring but not too bad this time of year. I certainly wouldn’t want to fall in the water though. Brrr.
On the way to the trail, you will pass the Stillwater mine and it’s only a couple miles further from there. This virtual nature hike and nature trail is the return leg. I also filmed the outbound leg with different views and another nearby trail called Woodbine Falls. I hope you enjoy this treadmill walking scenery.
