Let’s explore Hot Springs State Park in Thermopolis, Wyoming!
This beautiful and historic area is Wyoming’s first state park, established as part of a treaty agreement with the Shoshone and Arapaho tribes—a treaty that still ensures free public access to the mineral pools today. That legacy continues, even as private operators like Star Plunge and Hellie’s Tepee Spa also provide additional hot spring experiences within the park.
Set along the Big Horn River, the park is full of wide green lawns, shady trees, and peaceful walking paths—including a scenic trail that crosses the river via a suspension footbridge. You’ll also find picnic areas, flower gardens, and the striking natural travertine terraces, formed by mineral deposits from the flowing hot springs.
The area includes a managed herd of bison, and there are several lodging options nearby like Days Inn, Best Western, and even an RV campground. The park is also home to both private and public facilities, including the Gottsche Rehabilitation Center, the Wyoming Pioneer Home, and the historic Plaza Hotel, also known as the Callaghan Apartments.
