Hello Walkers,
Today we’re heading out for a stroll through Montana’s autumn colors, and while we’ve done this route before, it’s been a few years since we’ve caught it in full fall splendor.
We begin up on the bench above Livingston, MT, looking down over the town and the Yellowstone River. From this vantage point, the Absaroka Mountains and Crazy Mountains stretch across the horizon, already dusted with the season’s first high-altitude snow. The crisp air is pure fall, carrying that mix of cool mountain breeze and the promise of winter ahead.
Our route takes us along Old Meyers River Road / Old Swingley Road, winding down toward the river. Looking south, we spot the Wine Glass area, and I share the story behind its name. Then we join the Meyers River View Trail, stepping beneath towering cottonwoods glowing gold in the morning light. The air is rich with the sweet riparian scent of cottonwoods and willows, while sparrows call from the underbrush—though their songs are often drowned out by the honking flocks of geese flying overhead.
Along this stretch, we pass friendly locals walking their dogs, catch glimpses of braided river channels, and look east toward a working cattle farm. Walks like this are some of my favorites to film—blending the beauty of the outdoors with the chance to share a little slice of our community with you.
One thing I didn’t mention while filming—just the night before, Livingston threw a lively Oktoberfest block party. A couple thousand folks filled the streets, grabbing food and drinks from the local restaurants and bars. I even spotted a few people in lederhosen and dirndls. It was a true small-town celebration.
