Hood River is known for a couple of things. Primarily its wind based water sports but also the Hood River Incident. I’ll tell you about that after the walking tour.

Hood River, Oregon Virtual City Tour and Treadmill Scenery

It’s a breezy day in Hood River, Oregon but that shouldn’t be a surprise. It’s one of the reasons it has become a mecca for wind surfers and kite boarders. It helps that Hood River is only about an hour’s drive from Portland. Nestled into the Colombia River valley, the hills seem to funnel the winds from the ocean or the plains through the mountains here.
The town itself sits on the southern bank of the river on a hillside overlooking the river. I’ll start this walk at a high point and zig zag my way back through town. I’ll point out restaurants and shops, breweries, the train station, and other things to do in Hood River as we go.

Lots of unique things to do in Hood River

I’ll also show you some of the lovely old classic homes in one of the residential areas near downtown. These stately houses have grand porches and must have incredible views of the gorge. It’s June so the flowers also decorate the front yards and add a ton of color to my walk.

Down by the river, I find a lot of infrastructure and services geared towards kite surfing and kite boarding. I even see a lot of people getting ready to hit the water. It seems like a lot of people bring and RV and base out of the parking lot. Interestingly to me, most of the people I saw were older than me, probably in their 60’s. It gives me hope for myself in the coming years. We end up by the water and I give you a good look at the river.

I hope you enjoyed this virtual treadmill tour. If you’d like to find more walks, take a look around the site. We have a ton of virtual walking tours around the world in our library where city walks live. Keep on steppin’ -H

Weather in Hood River

Weather can vary drastically throughout the year. It regularly gets above 100F in the summer and can get below zero in the winter. Located at the transition zone between wet temperate rainforest to the west, and dry shrub-steppe desert to the east, Hood River has a moderate climate with rainy winters and warm summers, although rainfall there is somewhat less than Portland and other nearby areas in the Willamette Valley

The Hood River Incident

The Hood River incident involved the removal of 16 Nisei servicemen’s names from the county “roll of honor” in Hood River, Oregon, by the local American Legion Post 22. The incident, on November 29, 1944, was part of a string of anti-Japanese actions taken in an attempt to prevent removed Japanese Americans from returning to the area after their release from internment by the United States federal government. National outrage against the community heightened five weeks later when a local Japanese American serviceman died after completing a heroic mission in the Philippines. Under great pressure, the local American Legion post restored Nisei names to the wall of the county courthouse on April 29, 1945.
