Virtual Walk Around Lookout Mountain, Tennessee – Chatanooga

Stone Gates at Point Park on Lookout Mountain in TN
Classic old stone gates lead to the park area and lookouts

Lookout Mountain is one of those names I’ve heard so often but never really knew much about. Last time I filmed in Chatanooga, I didn’t have time to get up here. I enjoyed the drive up past a lot of wonderful, large homes in a quiet suburban neighborhood. I paid to park right next to the little visitor center which I visited before filming. I expected to find more of a battle memorial or military type display but really I found something more resembling a typical city park.

So many great views and lookouts

In addition to a quiet sylvan park, I found some incredible views which explained the name “Lookout Mountain”. On one side, you can look out over the Tennessee River and see the city out in the distance. It’s a bit overcast but you can still see off into the distance. We’ll see some artillery emplacements and some signs indicating details of which group manned which battery. It’s easy to imagine why this was an important location.

Large Covered porch in old home
I love a good covered porch.

From there we climb down to another overlook and then loop around and up to the top. From there we make our way back out of the little park and out to see a few of the old homes in the area. We see the vertical railway station that is closed and head back. I loved seeing all the fall foliage and hearing the birds singing.

As a non-expert, I chose not to talk too much about the battle (in fact I think I got a few things wrong). I also don’t discuss Rock City and Ruby Falls which are sites nearby. Someday, I hope to take TravelingMel back with me so we can put out some comprehensive info on the area. Until then, Keep on Steppin’ -Henry
