We are on the road again and back in Alaska. Last time we stayed around Anchorage, Seward, and Homer on the Kenai Peninsula but this time we’ve ventured inland to Fairbanks. Surprisingly small for the state’s third largest city (31k), it spreads itself out over all its open space but the downtown area remains compact.

Unsurprisingly, Fairbanks hasn’t been around for very long. At just over a 100 years old, it sits on the Chena River near where it meets the Tanana River. Long the domain of indigenous people, the city became known for furs and gold. But, now it’s known for Aurora, outdoor recreation, and as a gateway to Prudhoe bay and the oil fields.

Although the skies turned grey, it only adds to the northern austerity of the place. I hope you enjoy my virtual walk through downtown Fairbanks. It’s an amazing part of the world.
