Italian Dolomites Nature Trail in Ortisei – Virtual Treadmill Walking Tour and 4K – City Walks

Ortisei has many hiking trails lead out of the town. This is the one that leads past the kneep walk, the adventure course, and the playground. If you follow the trail further it leads up to Rifugio Firenze. It follows a little stream as we walk amongst the fall colors. I hope you enjoy this relaxing nature walk and 4k “City” Walk. Please feel free to share with others who might enjoy it and keep on steppin’. -H

So many wonderful, quiet paths to wander and tour

Ortisei, together with S. Cristina and Selva Gardena, acts as one of the three municipalities of the Val Gardena. Many consider it one of the most popular tourist destinations in South Tyrol because of its uniquely beautiful location and the local hospitality. Ortisei has a wonderful pedestrian zone with shops, cafés and restaurants and a central bus station which gives access to many of the surrounding smaller towns.

Probably, the best months to visit the area in the summer are apparently from mid-June to mid-October. We stayed in the area late September to early October. July and August get busy, but you can still find some peace on the regional trails and in the meadows. The main hiking areas and trails will be crowded in July and August but we found them to be fairly open in the autumn.

Several nature trails leading right out of town

Wikipedia: Urtijëi; German: St. Ulrich in Gröden; Italian: Ortisei is a town of 4,637 inhabitants in South Tyrol in northern Italy. It occupies the Val Gardena within the Dolomites, a mountain chain that is part of the Alps.

Geography: Urtijëi borders the following municipalities: Kastelruth, Villnöß, Lajen and Santa Cristina Gherdëina.

History: The Ladin-language name Urtijëi derives from the Latin word urtica and the suffix -etum, with the meaning “place of nettles”. From 1860 to 1914 Urtijëi experienced a relevant economic growth due to the opening of a major road connecting Val Gardena to the main railroad; as a result the local woodcarving industry flourished. International tourism developed through the discovery of the Dolomites first by English tourists, and subsequently visitors from other parts of Austria-Hungary as well as the German Empire. Currently, the town’s economy is mostly based on winter skiing tourism, summer hiking tourism, and woodcarving.
