We spent an off day in Besançon, France. It’s a beautiful city nestled into the oxbow of the Doubs river.

I’d taken a train to Dole earlier in the day for a morning walk and then my son and I went up to the Fortress that overlooks the city and both sides of the oxbow river. It has an amazing museum of Occupation and Resistance. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to include that bit on this walk since the rain came in and we had to scurry back to cover.
I did manage to get out for a walk after dinner. There are a ton of restaurants by the river and nearby which was great and we’ll walk by there near the end of this walk. The best part about the timing was the evening light. The sun had started to set and the low angle golden light made for some great shadows and colors. It really accentuated the 17th century architecture and parks. I start the walking tour out at the base of the fortress hill near the cathedral and historic Roman arch and get into a bit of the history of Besançon.
As we make our way down the streets towards the river, I’ll point out various buildings and architecture. I love the old stonework and how modern life has just filled it up without changing it too much like roots of a tree. Weird metaphor, I know. We had seen a demonstration roll by while we were at dinner and I find them again in a city square. A bunch of families with New Caledonian roots and their supporters were protesting a recent political decision that I don’t really know that much about. It’s was a fairly happy protest with kids and families taking part. Pretty interesting to see actually. They’d finished up and seemed to be just enjoying the early summer evening when I found them again.
From there I make my way down to the riverfront area and snake my way through a couple of neighborhoods. We’ll see a bunch of people still out dining and spending time with friends in the cool evening. The River Doubs stays confined by large walls but adds to the ambience of the tour. We finish up in a lovely park with towering trees and great views of the river and mountains. We stayed in the shiny glass Hotel Ibis across the river.
Thanks for joining me on this treadmill video scenery from Besançon. Keep on Steppin’ -H
